Francis Allen Institute
Teaching And Thinking With The Head And The Heart
Welcome
Educational Professional Development for Informal Educators! Do
you teach Sunday Classes, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Youth Sports
Programs, etc.? Francis Allen Institute has created a course
designed specifically for non-educators who teach youth.
Teams
of students will explore the characteristics and motion of race cars as
they are released from various heights on a ramp. Once the
students have collected data on their cars they will use what they know
to go on a rally around the room putting their car through a
variety of challenges.
Later, the team will design a new challenge. The challenge will
be introduced to their fellow racers. Other teams will experience
the challenges and then rate each challenge on a variety of
characteristics. The “ultimate challenge” will be selected and
the team who created the challenge will be awarded for their efforts
and creativity.
Curious George Science Party
Students in Grades K-1 will use their curiosity to explore math
and science using basic party favors. Curious George will be the
host of the party and the students will move from one exploration to
another having fun while focusing on content based on the Indiana
Academic Standards.
Mystery Festival!
Student detectives
conduct forensic science tests on evidence found at a "crime scene" then
work together to seek their own solutions. Key science concepts are
explored and the crucial distinction between evidence and inference is
emphasized. Students use a multitude of critical thinking skills and
the investigation has been aligned with Indiana Academic
Standards. Students will enjoy trying to figure out what happened
at the crime scene!
