Family Math, Science, or Problem Solving Events
Francis Allen Institute creates and presents events for families at the
institute or at your school or organization site. Events can be
created based on the needs of your individual group or you can select
from pre-designed events.
Science Fair for All!
This science family event focuses on the preparation of students and
their fanilies for a school-wide science fair. The families will
start the evening by creating vehicles made with a set of given
materials. The vehicles will be powered by someone in the family
blowing on the vehicle. All materials nust be used in the
creation of the "PUFF" mobiles. As the families finish their puff
mobiles, they can participate in a variety of stations set up around
the room. The stations are desined to give students and their
parents ideas for the types of investigations make effective science
fair projects. Once all the vehicles are ready for competition, a
Puff -off will be held tpo see which family has created the best "PUFF"
mobile. Before the fimal puff-off, the families will indulge in
an ice cream treat they make themselves in a ziplock bag. A great
edible physical science lesson! The evening ends with the final
puff-off and a list of ideas for science fair exhibits. This event can
be adjusted to encourage families to do science
together. Everything is the same with the exception of the
stations. They are switched with fun science actiivities you can
do at home with everyday items.
Math Mania
This family math event is designed to provide parents with background
knowledge to assist them in seeing how some basic math concepts work
together. They also create an easy to use tool to assist them
with helping their children with multiplication, division and
fractions. While the parents are receiving information in one
session, their children are in another session learning a variety of
fun games used to practice basic facts in all operations.
The materials in the games include items found around the house.
The same game format can be used with all their children no matter the
level of their math skills. Once the first sessions come to a
close, the parents and children are reunited. While they are
enjoying a snack, the children teach the parents the games they have
learned in their session. This event requires volunteers who are
willing to attend a planning session prior to the event.
